New members sought for the HRC's Public Health Research Committee

Issue date:
Baby hearing test

The Health Research Council's Public Health Research Committee (PHRC) is a statutory committee set out in the HRC Act 1990, with members appointed by our Council. The committee advises on public health research funding offered through a range of HRC grant types, such as project and programme grants and career development awards.

The PHRC is now seeking to appoint new co-opted members. Three to four co-opted 1-year positions will be available to assist with succession planning and also bring additional expertise and diversity to the committee.

Please note that not all members nominated may be able to be appointed due to the limited number of positions available. The PHRC will discuss nominees in early 2025 and put forward final recommendations to Council for final approval.

We are asking our stakeholders to nominate colleagues who may be suitable for consideration of one of these appointments and be willing to take on this additional responsibility (in consultation with them and with their approval). Self-nominations are also welcome.

These are key positions for the PHRC, which is seeking researchers who demonstrate strategic thinking, can see the bigger picture, and have a commitment to advance Māori health and the health of communities experiencing highest health needs in New Zealand through robust processes.

All members are being sought with the following ideal attributes, noting that some may be developed during the term:

  • Preferably, the appointee will be an internationally competitive researcher (or on that trajectory) within the public health research spectrum, with experience as a peer reviewer and/or science assessment committee member for the HRC or equivalent agencies.
  • Ideally, the candidate will be available to co-chair HRC assessing committees or be willing to observe the process then co-chair in the future.
  • Expertise in public health research.
  • The appointee will be an established researcher with a recent record of relevant high-quality research in the field.
  • Optionally, the member may have expertise with health policy where it intersects with public health research.

Please email PublicHealthResearch@hrc.govt.nz with potential candidates’ names, contact details and 5-page CV by 1pm on Monday 10 February 2025
