Lay summary
Research in youth mental health has been primarily led by clinicians and has not always met the needs and priorities of community based service providers, Māori or people with lived experiences. This project explores what research has been funded in the sphere of youth mental health in New Zealand by performing a structured review of health research funded from 2000 to 2022, and compares this to the priorities identified by two reference panels. First a group of people who work in the delivery of community based youth and addictions care, and second, a group of young people with lived experience of poor mental health and/or addictions.
By comparing and contrasting the priorities for research of these practitioners and lived experience groups, with the funded research completed, we identify future directions and priorities for youth mental health research as we form a new collaborative research group.
