Lay summary
Kaupapa Māori pregnancy and parenting initiatives provide meaningful and transformational change for Māori māmā hapū (pregnant women) and whānau. Yet, historical and systematic barriers limit the potential for community and Māori providers to authentically support whānau. This study will centre on an environmental scan, scope, and showcase of Māori initiatives centred on hapūtanga, pēpi, and tamariki, to understand mechanisms and measures for success. To achieve health equity, and work closer toward Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations, this research will centre on the co-design of an integrated pathway of care to enhance engagement and relationships of health services with whānau. Findings will inform best practice standards for pregnancy and parenting initiatives that are reflective of Māori needs and aspirations. With the newly formed Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora, it is time to deliver on the various strategic documents to authentically meet the needs of māmā hapū and whānau.
