Lay summary
New Zealand continues to experience a higher incidence of traumatic brain injury. Health awareness, health literacy, self-care and self-reporting are important to improve health outcomes, particularly among our rangatahi. Central to this delivery is the need to demonstrate the importance of the brain and the consequences of injury to this organ in a manner that is identifiable to our rangatahi. The proposed research project will sit at the intersection of mātauranga Māori, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and medical imaging research. Research will focus on how we can teach rangatahi the importance of the brain and the need to protect it through both a te ao Māori and Western Science lens, while also exposing students to various STEM careers with the hopes of inspiring rangatahi to explore these fields.
