Lay summary
The project will explore how hohou te rongo (a spiritually restorative healing process) is facilitated in hauora and rongoā wānanga at Hihiaua – a cultural centre based in Whangarei Terenga Parāoa. This project will identify what happens when community, including taitamariki and mātanga (expert practitioners), experience a transformational shift (Te Pou Eke) in their teaching/learning from te kauae raro (the terrestrial/practice realm) to te kauae runga (the celestial/spiritual realm). This study will focus on the in-between and liminal spaces of healing and learning, referred to as hīnātore (an epiphany or enlightenment), and the ways these hīnātore create opportunities for hohou te rongo. A second aim is to better understand how engagement in mātauranga tuku iho can contribute to collective reclamation, restoration and renewal of mātauranga Māori in health and education practice and policy.
