Lay summary
Although research on Māori experiences of access to cancer care is limited, prior research has advocated for improved communication and information; better resourcing for Maori providers and whanau; use of cancer navigators; more coordinated service delivery, changes in mainstream services and cultural competence training for all health workers (Walker, Signal, Russell, Smiler, & Tuhiwai, 2008). This recommendation suggests that shifting oncology treatment services into Maori community settings where Whānau Ora navigation is provided may improve care for whanau and be one innovative way to drive equitable healthcare access and outcomes across the cancer continuum. This research proposes bringing together the Whanau Ora philosophy and Oncology treatment in a Māori community setting, that is accountability to that community.
