Lay summary
Thyrotoxicosis is a common endocrine disorder. Untreated, it leads to significant illness, reduced quality of life and premature death. Māori have an increased incidence of thyrotoxicosis. When compared to non-Māori, Māori experience greater barriers at every step along the journey of thyroid disease - from first symptoms through the treatment path, and for at least 10 years following permanent treatment. As such, a different approach is needed. The objective of this research is to use a co-design methodology within a Kaupapa Māori framework to identify ways to improve the responsiveness of healthcare care for Māori with thyrotoxicosis. A new model of healthcare delivery will be developed and tested, in a community responsive, power-sharing environment. Results from this research will be translatable to other diseases in which Māori are disproportionately adversely affected, with the ultimate aim of achieving health equity.
