Lay summary
This kaupapa Māori informed literature review seeks to address a critical gap in understanding Takatāpui (Māori LGBTQIA+) health and wellbeing. Although a small but growing body of strengths based research exists, Takatāpui realities remain underrepresented in health literature, policy, and service design. Where included, research often focuses on inequity and poor outcomes, with limited attention to joy and resilience. This review seeks to shift that imbalance by identifying and drawing together existing knowledge about Takatāpui strength, joy, and collective wellbeing.
Guided by kaupapa Māori principles, the review centres mātauranga Māori and lived experience. Using reflexive thematic analysis, the review will collate insights from a wide range of literature to explore representations of Takatāpui joy and resilience. The findings aim to inform more inclusive, culturally grounded health services and policy. This kaupapa responds to inequities in hauora and supports Takatāpui aspirations for wellbeing that is culturally rooted and joyfully lived.
