Lay summary
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term that describes the neurological and physical effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol. The need for effective, evidence-based FASD interventions and support represents a significant health priority for Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and is one of the top research priorities identified by multi-stakeholders in New Zealand. Research on FASD has generally focused on challenges faced by this population while insight into strengths and quality of life has lagged. The proposed research will apply a strengths-based approach to supporting individuals with FASD and their whānau. The research will (1) establish partnerships with key stakeholders, (2) identify ways to engage and capture the voices of individuals with FASD, (3) identify strengths of individual and whānau impacted by FASD, and (4) co-create and pilot a strengths-based intervention. The research will provide empirical evidence to guide future interventions, policy and support services.
