Chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the need for health care services to manage CKD, are increasing internationally. The Global Burden of Disease 2010 study identified chronic kidney failure as one of the three causes of death with the greatest increase from 1990 to 2010. In New Zealand, the incidence of new patients entering the renal replacement programme is increasing by 10 -12% per annum, Chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the need for health care services to manage CKD, are increasing internationally.
