Lay summary
I am passionate about te roro mīharo (the amazing brain). I am a physiotherapist respected for my expertise in the management of concussion (mild traumatic brain injury). Concussions are common in Aotearoa, resulting in a significant burden for the injured individual, their whānau, and wider society. For many of these New Zealanders, returning to sport is a key goal. Unfortunately, these individuals are more likely to experience another concussion in the next 12 months, increasing their risk for long-term brain dysfunction. This suggests that some may have returned to sport prematurely. The SAFE For Play project will develop a protocol to aid this decision-making process. To achieve this, I will investigate the use of exertion to sharpen clinical tests of physiology, balance, and visual skills. Although clinically I work with the All Blacks, my dream is to ensure that all New Zealanders are protected from the risks of repeated concussions.
