Lay summary
Whānau Māori experience substantial inequities in cancer outcomes compared to non-Māori. A primary driver of these inequities is the Western-based design of cancer control and, more broadly, the Aotearoa health system. Rongoā Māori is a dynamic system of hauora that has looked after whānau Māori since mai rā anō. There is an increasing demand from whānau who want rongoā to be normalised in cancer prevention and care. However, there is limited understanding about rongoā and cancer, including, but not limited to, accessibility, availability, and how and when rongoā is used in cancer prevention and care. This development grant will enable us to connect with rongoā practitioners and whānau and co-design cancer and rongoā pātai and priorities in preparation for further NKK and HRC rounds.
