Lay summary
In homelike aged residential care (ARC) facilities, residents live in small houses supported by staff to continue household and cultural activities essential to wellbeing. The placement in a homelike facility will enable an understanding of the research that matters most to residents and practitioners. It will ensure the project fits their needs and the need for knowledge about culturally appropriate person-centred nursing care. A two-phase mixed methods study will be delivered over two years. Phase one will describe the impact of the homelike model of care in New Zealand ARC on standardised interRAI Long-Term Care Facilities' quality indicators. Phase two will be co-designed with host facility residents and staff, including the Māori-led cultural advisory team. Qualitative methods will be used to explore the work of nursing teams in homelike and traditional ARC facilities. A draft quality improvement tool for ARC facilities will be developed from phase one and two results.
