Lay summary
One in three people could be helped by rehabilitation because of a long-term health condition (LTC). LTCs (e.g. heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis) are a leading cause of suffering and early death in Aotearoa. Māori and Pasifika peoples are more likely to have LTCs and face consistent inequities within current health services. This research activity proposes a whānau-focused, holistic rehabilitation programme to support greater quality-of-life in people living with LTCs. This programme includes exercise and health education facilitated by allied health professionals with clinical expertise working with community health providers to support people with LTCs. This placement allows for the co-creation of a meaningful LTC rehabilitation programme with the indigenous communities that need it the most. This research aligns with the new models of care proposed in the reformed health system and helps realise the potential of our Aotearoa Allied Health workforce.
