Lay summary
We developed a unique bioelectrical heart model that tests pacemaker clinical parameter settings in a real-time closed-loop system. This has generated recent interest from major device companies and aligns with FDA model strategies for device safety. There is a risk of pacemaker driven undesirable heart rhythms, or arrhythmia, and it is an opportune time to translate our research into clinical application. Our goal is an intuitive interface to the model, so that a clinician easily specifies disease conditions, a pacemaker type and settings. The system then highlights pacemaker mediated arrhythmic risks and dynamic heart conditions where these are manifested. A further goal is the seamless personalisation of the heart model to patient ECG data from wearable monitors, generating customised setting suggestions for clinicians. Our project outcomes include increased clinical confidence for managing cardiac rhythms and expanded relationships between researchers, industry and clinicians for medical device health delivery that benefits community.
