Lay summary
A pre-post cohort study to assess the effect of a nurse-led electronic symptom management programme (ePRO), integrated with clinical decision support (CDS), on symptom management and quality of life in advanced breast cancer (ABC) patients. Patients will respond to customised symptom surveys; when pre-defined thresholds (severity, frequency) are met, a specialist ABC nurse will receive an alert about specific symptoms, along with guidelines-based CDS recommendation to inform symptom management interventions (primarily telehealth). This multi-site study will examine and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of ePRO/CDS on quality of life and symptom management, along with impact on unscheduled hospital care and DHB resources and practices. There will be a particular emphasis on implications for equity of Maori and reduced variation in care.
