"Losing their licence" can be one of the most difficult challenges that comes with the diagnosis of dementia mate wareware. Driving cessation can lead to increased social isolation and depressive symptoms. To address this issue, we have developed the "Dementia and Driving Toolkit" (21/1068/A) to facilitate proactive transport planning early in the dementia process, giving individuals and their families more control and choice. This approach aims to help individuals continue engaging in important activities after retirement from driving. By developing transport plans early on, individuals can become comfortable with other forms of transportation before driving cessation becomes a necessity. We plan to use interviews and diaries over six months to better understand the experience and challenges that patients/tūroro and their families/whānau face during the transition to other forms of transportation and use the findings to provide practical advice for effective transport planning and recommendations for stakeholders.
