Lay summary
To implement new innovations in cancer care in Aotearoa that will contribute towards achieving health equity, we must simultaneously develop leadership and a workforce to design, shape, and deliver its promise to whānau with cancer. We are now able to detect and measure the genetic changes of a patient's cancer, and in a growing number of cases, specifically match them with medicines that offer better responses. Sometimes an additional layer of "detective" work might be needed, drawing on a currently limited workforce capable of collating and reviewing the evidence quickly and accurately to help oncologists make the best decisions with patients: a Molecular Tumour Board (MTB). This project seeks to understand the current pathway to the MTB in order to plan the best way to establish and sustain Māori leadership and workforce to ensure that whānau Māori benefit from its emerging promise.
