Lay summary
With the continued rise of non-communicable diseases evident among Pacific peoples in New Zealand, recent work has highlighted a need for examining more holistically the elements that contribute to health and well-being. Research models of health which align with Pacific peoples’ culture and values system, include a component of spiritual health. Spirituality continues to play a significant role in the lives of Pacific peoples. A Western biomedical perspective often overlooks the importance of cultural beliefs and how spiritual health perspectives are important. Therefore, continuing our understanding of traditional indigenous knowledge systems about health and well-being is an essential area of research.
