The term ‘prison pipeline’ has long been used to describe the systemic conditions that inevitably lead to Māori over-representation in the prison system, but what happens to whānau Māori upon release? ‘Out the Gate’ is the community-derived working title given to the dissemination component of the findings from the ‘TIAKI’, a collaborative research project seeking to understand the lived experiences of Māori following their release from prison and their aspirations for individual and collective hauora. Using a kaupapa Māori performance methodology called Theatre Marae, the research team comprising community members, Māori theatre practitioners, and health researchers will present the study's key themes in public performances on marae and other community venues for hapori Māori, Hapū, Iwi, Māori social services and health providers, policy makers, central and local government. Furthermore, 'Out the Gate' will illustrate a Theatre Marae approach to facilitating timely community access to health research.
