Lay summary
Indigenous ways of being are becoming more popular in Aotearoa New Zealand. Kori tinana (physical activity) is a context in which language (reo), culture (maoritanga), knowledge (mātauranga) and identity (mana motuhake) can be realised and manifested. These strength-based factors feed the dimensions of hauora (health and wellbeing) envisioned in Te Whare Tapa Whā. In this project we seek to bring together indigenous kori tinana experts to collectively develop a broad foundation for mātauranga Māori of kori tinana. The group will have three objectives: 1. support indigenous experts in physical activity to expand indigenous knowledge 2. develop indigenous research projects 3. provide collaborations and support to physical activity-related research projects that involve indigenous peoples. In addition to a local focus, the group will also collaborate with international indigenous nations through our networks. The intention here is to develop and mentor early-career kori tinana proponents. Strengthening mātauranga and hauora are outcomes of this proposal.
