Lay summary
The filaggrin gene encodes a key primary skin cell protein important for the normal functions of the epidermis. Mutations in this gene have been associated and/or correlated with atopic dermatitis and food sensitisation. Genotyping studies has found ethnic groupings of these mutations particularly in European, African and East Asian populations and sub-populations. This research aims to detect known and uncover novel filaggrin gene variants unique to the Māori population of Aotearoa. Then contextualising these variants to whānau health by generating models of novel filaggrin mutations and collection of qualitative data on food sensitisation. Finally, this project aims to understand the tikanga (protocol) for accessing He Kākano - The Aotearoa Māori Variome Resource in biomedical research of Māori populations.
