Diagnosis of oral cancer requires removal of part of the lesion (biopsy) and microscopic examination (histopathology). This requirement for surgery limits early diagnosis. We have developed a non-invasive ultrasound device called UltraD3 to help determine whether an oral lesion is cancerous and requires biopsy. The device does not require an expert to operate, so nurses or community caregivers can use it. Anyone worried about a lesion in the mouth can approach their GP, nurse, or caregiver, and get the lesion checked using UltraD3. If the lesion is found to be cancerous, biopsy followed by histopathology can be performed for confirmation and treatment started immediately. In the proposed project, we will test UltraD3 on 20 patients and find out if it can detect cancer.
