Lay summary
Maori and Pacific People with chronic airways disease fall through the gaps in our healthcare system resulting in increased morbidity and mortality compared with the rest of the New Zealand population. We aim to examine whether a novel model of care, tailored to Maori and Pacific People with chronic airways disease, is more effective than usual care in reducing exacerbation rates, health related quality of life and exercise capacity. We plan to use results from our interviews, focus group sessions and discussions with Maori and Pacific community leaders along with current evidence to design the model of care then examine its effectiveness with a prospective, randomised controlled trial. As there are few previous similar studies with a specific focus on Maori and Pacific patients with chronic airways disease this study will contribute significantly to the current evidence base with an aim to improve Maori and Pacific health outcomes and equity of health.
