Lay summary
This research consist of a literature analysis that will look at models of Māori therapy, and the practical application of them within a New Zealand context, as well as investigating indigenous international models and practices. Current statistics highlight the overrepresentation of Māori in a myriad of mental health conditions, while clinical admission and re-admission data raises the question of whether the predominant Western models of therapy and treatment are serving this particular population, or whether – as Mason Durie asserts - this serious health problem calls for “innovative health measures, as well as the development of appropriate clinical interventions.” The literature analysis proposed for this Māori Summer Studentship is the first step towards the development of such appropriate – and indigenously based – measures, that will be undertaken by Te Whānau O Waipareira.
