Lay summary
Whilst the value of involvement of those with lived experience of suicide bereavement in suicide research is recognised, it is often overlooked in suicide prevention/postvention policy development and health service delivery. In particular, the insights of Māori who have faced intimate suicide loss is not readily translated into policy or practice. This proposal is for the establishment of a collective of Māori experts who have navigated this complex emotional and cultural landscape, to inform suicide research, policy and practice. Through wānanga and a literature review of lived experience involvement in suicide policy making, priority areas for further research will be identified. The collective will create a culturally grounded platform for sharing knowledge, fostering dialogue and developing strategies that enhance the responsiveness and effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts, support bereaved whānau, and contribute to improved Māori mental health outcomes. This initiative will set the foundation for future health service delivery improvements.
