Lay summary
Initial findings of Ngati Pikiao Iwi Trust’s research into the positive aging of Ngati Pikiao (NP) peoples indicates that kōeke (elders) fulfilling paepae (marae cultural) duties are tired. Serving across 12 NP marae regularly, and sometimes concurrently, kōeke are experiencing paepae duty fatigue; while simultaneously worrying about succession. The question, "mā wai e tō taku kauae ki uta" - who will take my place, is uppermost in their minds – and in the minds of NP as a whole. Helping to address this question, this research will investigate the potential future, and future potential, of NP marae. Leveraging current NP research findings, the research will investigate the place and role of the marae in the lives of NP rangatahi (youth) currently and speculatively (in the future). In so doing, the research will inform NP succession planning and, thereby, help to better support positive, rather than compromised, aging of NP peoples.
