Lay summary
Researchers from Kōkiri Marae and the University of Otago are partnering to examine how Māori-led processes, including active engagement with all stakeholders, can develop effective rehabilitation services for aging Māori to improve disability-related health service delivery and outcomes, and Māori well-being. In the activation grant we will convene hui at Kōkiri marae to enable kaumātua, their whānau, and health providers to identify the rehabilitation need of greatest interest and importance. We will take this community priority forward into existing planning for a project grant proposal. The priority will direct rehabilitation intervention development and evaluation in a 2-phase project grant comprising: (1) collaborative, interactive stakeholder workshops drawing on strengths and successful pathways in existing kaumātua services to co-design the new rehabilitation initiative, followed by (2) delivering and evaluating the intervention in the real-life setting of Kaumātua Services available to Māori aged 55 years and over in the Hutt Valley region.
