Lay summary
Many Māori (Tane and Wahine) aspire to represent their country. To play sport professionally, and to build a career which allows them to both engage their passion as well as to support their whānau. While many have successfully achieved these goals, the vast majority are less fortunate - and have had to grapple with the realisation that other career paths are required. Most players are well aware of these challenges and are able to effectively navigate the transition from aspiring athlete, and towards other professions or endeavours. For others, however, these realities are less well managed. And for some will lead to periods of depression, anxiety, and broader feelings of worthlessness. This kaupapa Māori study aims to investigate the type and range of mental health challenges faced by aspiring Māori athletes. Importantly, to contemplate what strategies might be employed to mitigate these issues and to better support Hauora Māori.
