Lay summary
Kimi Ora is a diabetes intervention programme that was developed as part of the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge by He Pikinga Waiora. Kimi Ora is led by a Maori Clinical Exercise Physiologist and has a dual focus on improving health in the whanau as well as the communities they live in. In its pilot phase, Kimi Ora achieved substantial results and has now been funded by Waikato DHB to continue delivery in Hamilton. Kimi Ora has significant potential to be scaled to other communities to benefit more Maori whanau but it is not understood how this could be achieved sustainably. The purpose of this research is to conduct a feasibility study to understand how Kimi Ora, a successful Maori focused diabetes intervention, could be sustainably scaled to other communities in New Zealand.
