Lay summary
Traditionally, medical school education focuses on clinical education to ensure that first year doctors have the skills and knowledge to manage medical needs of patients. The Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ) healthcare system is currently understaffed at all levels and junior doctors are experiencing record levels of burnout and dissatisfaction with their work. In order to effectively deliver comprehensive healthcare, ANZ requires a strong and engaged junior doctor workforce. Coaching is an increasingly available tool to help manage the challenges of life and work. We aim to identify factors that would lead 4th year medical students to enrol in a 2-year coaching programme to address burnout, wellbeing and resilience in the first year of medical practice. We will also interview first year doctors to identify areas of unmet need that could be addressed in a coaching programme. Our ultimate goal is to undergo further research implementing a coaching programme.
