Lay summary
Prediabetes is a precursor condition to developing type 2 diabetes. It is also highly common among young and old Pacific peoples. The onset of prediabetes starts earlier in life (childhood years), and impacts the social, health and wellbeing of the whole family. Early identification and obtaining appropriate prevention management could halt further serious long-term conditions. As part of this student summership, I will be carrying out two research components: (1) a literature review enquiring whether screening for prediabetes for children and adolescents is needed; and (2) assist in data interpretation and providing a summary report of data from a current research programme that aims to examine prediabetes risk among New Zealand children aged 11-13 years old. This award will further enhance my learning in public health research and broaden my understanding and knowledge of the growing prediabetes epidemic, especially among Pacific adolescents.
