Lay summary
Intuitive ritual: A mana wāhine sourcebook is a 250-page manuscript that was developed under the HRC Project 21/024 (Aho Tapairu). The book reclaims empowering mana wāhine knowledge, ritual, tikanga and te reo Māori terms to counter the body-shame that many Māori women and girls suffer as a consequence of derogatory colonial redefinitions of femininity that lead to poor health outcomes. The project will support the development, publication and launch of the book. It will also create a new journal with concentrated teachings from the book to increase accessibility and dissemination of the matauranga. Developing online educational content and wananga will also increase the uptake of the research findings for Māori communities and health organisations. The aim of this project is to empower and transform the way Māori women relate to their own bodies, encouraging kaitiakitanga and self-sovereignty, in order to effect positive health outcomes.
