Lay summary
Some New Zealanders are unable to access the eye care services that they need. One reason for this is that primary eye care services—including eye examinations and spectacle dispensing—are generally only provided by optometrists in private practice, which can be expensive and difficult to access for some New Zealanders. We aim to examine alternative service delivery models to improve access to primary eye care (for example, optometrists running semi-regular sessions within general practice clinics). We will gather knowledge in this Activation Project to inform this future research, including a summary of the key barriers and enablers that service providers (particularly optometrists and general practitioners) forsee to service delivery models that integrate primary eye care with primary care. This knowledge will help us refine the models that we include in our future HRC Project Application.
