Lay summary
Rates of type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes are high in Aotearoa/New Zealand, with inequalities in those of Pacific, Māori and Asian descent, and those experiencing socio-economic disadvantage. This activation work involves the ongoing development of a research partnership between Porirua Union Community Health Service (PUCHS) and University of Otago researchers. PUCHS is a very low-cost access primary care service whose staff are recognised to be very engaged with the community they serve, which includes high proportions of Pacific peoples and Māori. The grant will enable a detailed profile of the practice population to be developed from health records and analysed in conjunction with qualitative practice information to identify gaps and opportunities related to diabetes prevention and care. Culturally appropriate focus groups including diverse stakeholders will be used to identify priorities and develop novel responses aimed at reducing inequalities related to type 2 diabetes, to be tested in further health delivery research.
