Lay summary
The majority of people with Parkinson’s disease (PwP) and tangata whaiora develop digestive symptoms. These can occur at any stage of the disease and can negatively affect health and quality of life. In many PwP, food stays in the stomach longer than it should and this can cause nausea which can meaningfully interfere with eating, nutritional health and the absorption of the common medication taken to manage Parkinson’s. This study is a precursor to future trials where we aim to improve digestive function using targeted non-drug, dietary approaches. To prepare for those trials, first we must a) expand the community of PwP and others who are interested in this research in terms that are consistent with Mātauranga Māori, to hear their views b) ensure that PwP wish to take part in research of this kind. This proposal will address both of these linked objectives.
