Lay summary
The overarching aim of this mixed-methods study is to improve the experiences and outcomes of Tangata Whaiora Māori and their whanau accessing the Hauora a Toi adult in-patient mental health services in Tauranga and Whakatane. This region has a high proportion of Māori, and Māori are overrepresented in these services and have experienced some of the highest rates of seclusion in Aotearoa New Zealand. In late 2022, the Hauora a Toi Mental Health services committed to implementing a Kaupapa Māori model of care ‘Toi Ora’ aimed at improving the responsiveness of the service to Tangata Whaiora Māori and their Whānau. Within this context the present study will be carried out.
