Implicit bias is strongly linked to poor health for Maaori. Kidz First children’s hospital serves a large population of Maaori children living in poverty. The Maaori Child Health Research (MCHR) Collaborative based at Middlemore in partnership with mana whenua have prioritised a project at Kidz First acknowledging the interest of the doctors, nurses and staff there to address this issue.
The project lead will arrange for 3 hui over 6 months including staff, mana whenua, whaanau and experts to establish relationships and learn how implicit bias can be understood, measured, changed and improve health. Evidence will be reviewed and whaanau and staff interviewed. The research worker will develop a research proposal for the Health Research Council to implement an Implicit Bias programme at Kidz First in 2021-22. The proposal will be agreed by the final hui, approved by the MCHR Collaborative and submitted.
