Lay summary
For this project, we will bring together a diverse group of Māori researchers, big data researchers and autism researchers to build a team with the skills needed to conduct Māori-centred autism research using the integrated data infrastructure (IDI). The IDI has the potential to provide insight into the characteristics, needs and well-being of autistic Māori to inform future research and health delivery advances for this population. We will conduct exploratory work to identify the total number of autistic Māori, their characteristics and level of health and education-based support. A key focus of the project will be building relationships, particularly tuakana-teina relationships between new and senior Māori researchers. We will also establish and work in consultation with an pou herenga rōpū of members of the Māori autism community to ensure that our research aligns with needs and priorities of autistic Māori and their whānau.
