Lay summary
Human health is inextricably linked to the health of the planet. In Aotearoa New Zealand, poor planetary health contributes to human disease, e.g. contaminated water causing e-coli. A recent Royal Society report discussed how human health will be impacted by climate change. The health professional workforce must be climate-change ready to work in a changing climate, supporting patients changing climate-related health needs. We propose a pilot project advancing health professionals’ knowledge and understanding about links between human and planetary health using the Te Pae Mahutonga and One Health models. Activities will include: 1. Scoping literature review. 2. Consultation and relationship building. Build upon Māori relationships, privileging Indigenous models of health. 3. Hosting a wānanga to understand health professionals’ needs, and formation of an advisory group for stage 2 of this project. This project provides the foundation for co-development of strategies, including a toolkit, to develop a climate-ready and resilient workforce.
