In 2023, the New Zealand government implemented a pilot service to allow pharmacists to provide funded treatment of minor conditions to eligible patients. Eligible patients included those who self-identified as Māori and/or Pacific. Our team undertook a survey of over 230 pharmacists which showed that, although the majority of pharmacists supported ethnicity-based eligibility, the majority also would like evidence-informed training and resources to support them to have these conversations with patients and staff. We will investigate the types of resources and training pharmacists require and develop a training resource that aligns with the new Pharmacy Council of New Zealand competency standards, including those relating to cultural safety. This research activity will lead to future research relating to the development of pharmacist education for cultural safety and provide opportunities for pharmacy students and early career researchers to develop research skills.
