Lay summary
The whānau and hapū of Mangatoatoa marae has a long-standing relationship with health services. The Tokanui psychiatric hospital is based on our tribal lands and was a major source of employment for our hapū. Mangatoatoa marae saw the need to establish a marae-based health clinic where patients belonging to our whānau/hapū are welcomed weekly. Mangatoatoa has held exercise and nutrition programmes to ensure whānau have a holistic hauora experience. Researchers have been invited to provide empirical evidence that demonstrates how this healthcare delivery has made a difference in the lives of whānau, hapū, as well as the health of the marae. Many marae struggle to create ongoing engagement outside of tangihanga, therefore, there are multiple benefits to this research project.
