Lay summary
Within the Mental Health sector in Aotearoa there is an increased emphasis on Trauma Informed Care approaches. The current approach is informed primarily by western psychological definitions and a dominant view of what constitutes trauma that does not provide for cultural or collective understandings. Maori Providers working alongside whanau have for some time stated their concern at the privileging of western clinical approaches. This project explores Maori counsellors', clinicians' and healers' views of Trauma Informed Care in order to identify key principles and practices that will provide a Kaupapa Maori model for Trauma Informed Care when working with whanau.
