Lay summary
This cross-disciplinary rangahau explores the mental health and wellbeing of Māori All Blacks players and staff across a full representative season. Māori athletes often face unique pressures, including racism, cultural disconnection, and identity tension within elite sporting systems. Using kaupapa Māori approaches, this rangahau combines surveys and interviews to understand how these experiences affect hauora. Culturally grounded tools, such as Hua Oranga, will guide data collection and analysis. The goal is to create practical, Māori-led resources that support mental resilience in high-performance settings and beyond. Findings will be shared through workshops, publications, and tools for coaches and clinicians. Led by Dr Luke Rowe at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, this rangahau will uplift Māori models of wellbeing and offer insights relevant not just to sport, but also to education, health, whānau ora and other high-pressure fields.
