Lay summary
He Iti Rearea Kahikatea ka Taea (He Iti Rearea) is a kaupapa Māori research training course. It is designed to support a serving soldier—currently studying psychology—to learn, develop and carry out kaupapa Māori-aligned research that explores and responds to the health and wellbeing needs of Aotearoa New Zealand’s service members and veterans. The tauira (trainee) will receive guided training in kaupapa Māori research theory and practice, and will review, synthesise, and develop a journal publication based on findings from He Toa Taumata Rau (2022–2025)—a study that investigated military-to-civilian transition, an often-vulnerable period for the mental and emotional wellbeing of veterans and their whānau. He Iti Rearea aims to strengthen Māori research capability in the military domain and contribute to culturally grounded, transformative responses to veteran and service personnel health and wellbeing needs.
