Lay summary
This research aims to work within a kaupapa Māori paradigm to further develop and test the hauora rangatahi Māori model (developed in Georgia McCarty’s HRC PhD) in different contexts, including with a wide range of rangatahi (Māori youth). A kaupapa Māori approach will be used to co-design the model in collaboration with rangatahi, schools and Māori organisations. The project involves community engagement, qualitative research, and the evaluation of the model through wānanga, stakeholder consultations, and feedback loops to ensure it meets the needs and aspirations of rangatahi. Establishing a culturally appropriate model that rangatahi can use to describe their hauora, that also accommodates different ages, cognitive and learning abilities, will improve health outcomes. This innovative approach to describing (and potentially measuring) rangatahi Māori health will be of significant national and international interest, especially for indigenous populations.
