This project aims to explore perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to introducing clinical academic roles for nurses in Aotearoa, New Zealand (NZ) with key stakeholders from Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora, as well as education, policy, research, and practice sector leaders.
The global competition for nurses means NZ health organisations need to attract, value, and invest in the nursing workforce to maintain quality patient healthcare. One way of doing so is to promote and support clinical academic role development which have been shown to increase nursing recruitment, retention, and the quality of patient care. The dawn of the new national health system in NZ provides an ideal opportunity to investigate the feasibility of introducing this innovative role. Exploring how to develop and implement clinical academic roles for nurses with key stakeholders from policy, practice, education, research, and funding sectors, is timely and expedient.
