Lay summary
Diabetes is an epidemic disease, and is associated with specific damage to the heart. The nature of this injury is poorly understood and there is no specific therapy. In this project we investigate the role of abnormal glucose handling in promoting toxic accumulation of glycogen deposits in the heart and in damaging the proteins which are key in regulating effective contraction and heart pump action. The aim is to develop a strategy to prevent or reduce cardiac glucose damage in diabetes.
