Lay summary
Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of preventable blindness in Aotearoa New Zealand, yet many people, especially Māori and Pacific communities, are not being screened. This research is needed to find better ways to deliver screening so more people can get timely care. We will test artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can quickly check eye images for signs of disease, comparing its accuracy and safety with current methods across Health NZ screening centres. We will also interview patients, clinicians, and health leaders to understand how AI could be introduced fairly and effectively in local clinics, including Māori and community providers. This work could lead to faster, more accessible screening, help prevent blindness and improve equity. It is expected to save time, reduce costs, and provide good value for money by using resources more efficiently while protecting quality of care.
