Lay summary
Pacific communities make significant contributions to New Zealand’s economy, sports and arts. Despite this, Pacific people, particularly men, face serious health inequities and poorer health outcomes compared to non-Pacific people. These disparities are evident both in New Zealand and in Pacific countries, with Pacific men experiencing higher rates of mortality and disability. This research focuses on Fijian men to explore the ethical issues and practical barriers affecting their health and wellbeing. By conducting interviews and analysing health statistics, the study aims to identify the key challenges Fijian men face in accessing healthcare in New Zealand and their home countries. The findings will inform the development of policies and programmes designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Fijian men, ultimately strengthening communities and ensuring better use of resources.
